Bend Meet + Cove Palisades

Monday, August 14th, 2006

The last meet of the season was this weekend, in Bend. I was staying with Adam and his dad in a tent about 30 seconds from the pool.

The car we took to get there was a little Lumina towing the boat with all our luggage. When we were going over the Santiam pass, we started hearing unhealthy noises coming from the engine. Because we were listening to loud music, and because the temperature gauge is the one that nobody looks at, we didn’t realize what was happening. Then, we looked back, and could barely see the boat through all the smoke.
We stopped for a few minutes, let the engine cool down, and then resumed. Fortunately, we (barely) made it to the pool without anymore problems.

There are two pools at Bend: an indoor 25 meter pool and an outdoor 50 meter pool. The little kids were swimming in the outdoor pool (but only using half of it), and we were swimming in the indoor pool.
I swam the 100 free, 200 back, 100 breast, 50 free, 100 fly, and 200 free, and I won the 100 free, 50 free and 100 fly.

On Saturday we went boating at Cove Palisades. The place looks like the Grand Canyon filled with water.
I published photos of the meet and the lake to Flickr and to a Photocast.
Here are a few of them.

Bend Meet

Friday, August 11th, 2006

I’ll be riding with Adam up Bend today for the last meet of the season, so I won’t be replying to any email until Sunday or Monday.

On another note, look at this video of a triple stage rocket Eric and I launched yesterday. You can’t really see much, but the sound effects are worth it…
And no, it didn’t survive.

Oregon State Championships

Monday, July 31st, 2006

Last night, we got back from the State Championship meet at Mt. Hood, which lasted four days. I swam the 50 free, 100 free, 200 free, 400 free, 100 fly and 200 fly, plus three relays. I made it to finals in everything, so I actually swam 15 events.

I missed a Zone time in the 100 fly by 0.14 second! And yes, I time trialed it afterwards to try and get a faster time, but I was almost two seconds off in the time trial. It was my fourth 100 fly at the meet (prelims + finals + relay + time trial), so I was tired. At least I got 4th place.

I got all best times, even though it was mostly cold, and on the last day, raining.

I didn’t get very many pictures since I spent all my free time sleeping, but here are a few…

We’ll be leaving on Thursday morning for the State Championships in Mt. Hood. Hopefully I’ll post some pictures after the meet.

100 back: 1:12.05 (12th place)
400 IM: 5:27.68 (9th place)

400 free: 4:42.67 Note to self: next time, work your 3rd 100!

(Some of you might not care about my times. For your information, these are for my information, therefore I don’t care that you don’t care.)

It was too hot to wear a shirt, so we decided to see if towels over the head really do work…

Mike Morris meet, day 3

Sunday, June 18th, 2006

On the last day of the meet, I swam the 200 IM, 100 free, 200 fly and 200 free relay.

200 IM: I took 3rd in the 200 IM, with a time of 2:36.37.

200 free relay: Our relay included me, Kyle, Adam and James. My split was 27.7.

100 free: I came in 1st in this race, and I got 1:01.36. I improved 9 hundredths of a second from last time.

200 fly: I won the 200 fly, even though I was five seconds off my best time. I got 2:35. Kate said it was still a good race because my splits were 36, 39, 39, 39.

Our team took 2nd (behind Corvallis) and I won the high point award for 13-14 boys! :D

Here are some pictures from the meet…

Mike Morris meet, day 2

Saturday, June 17th, 2006

The second day of the meet was hot and sunny. I think everyone got sunburnt… It’s going to hurt to get in the pool tomorrow. :P My events today were 400 IM, 50 free, 100 back and a 400 free relay.

400 IM: I took 1st in this race with a time of 5:29.58. I was seeded with 5:58, but I don’t know where that came from…

400 free relay: Kyle, Andrew, Adam and I were in this relay (in order). Our splits were 1:02, 1:06, 1:06, 1:01.

50 free: I got second in the 50 free, and Kyle got 1st. Our times were 27.87 and 27.75, respectively. We were in lanes 1 and 8; I love it when the slowest lanes get 1st and 2nd. :P

100 back: I got 1:15.07 in this event, and I came in 6th. Because it’s an outdoor pool, I ran into the laneline three times, and Kate said my looking around cost me about three seconds. At least I achieved my goal: to stay in my own lane!

Mike Morris meet, day 1

Friday, June 16th, 2006

This meet is taking place at the Amazon pool in Eugene. The pool didn’t feel very fast, at least today (it was cold and windy), but maybe it will be better tomorrow. I swam three events today, plus a relay.

200 free: I won this event, and I got 2:15. I was three seconds off my best time though.

100 fly: I also got 1st in this event. My time was 1:08.

200 medley relay: The relay included Adam, Andrew, Kyle and me, with me swimming the fly leg. My split was 31 seconds, but I can’t remember what our overall time was.

800 free: I won this event, even though I’m not a distance swimmer… *_* I got 10:00.00(!). Kate’s first reaction was “I thought I told you to go under ten minutes!”

Albany Meet

Sunday, June 4th, 2006

We had a meet in Albany yesterday, in which I swam the 50 free, 200 fly, 400 free, and the fly leg of the 400 medley relay.

Relay: I’m not sure what our time was, but my fly split was 1:07.10. I think we came in 2nd.

50 free: I came in 2nd in this event (Kyle got first), with a time of 28:12. I was going for a Zone time, which is 27.39. I’ll get it someday… :P

200 fly: I got 2:35.10 in the 200 fly, and I came in 1st. I also tied Amber down to the hundredth of a second. I didn’t have any competition though, which could be why I was five seconds off my best time.

400 free: In the 400 free, I got 4:48 and 1st place. Al liked my splits, because they were 1:10, 1:14, 1:13, 1:10.

Corvallis Triathlon

Tuesday, May 30th, 2006

I did the Corvallis Triathlon yesterday (1k swim, 12k bike, 4k run). I won my age group, but I think there were only three people in it. I also improved over a minute from last year, with a time of 58:42, but the running course was a little bit different.
