Triathlon

Monday, May 30th, 2005

I did the Corvallis triathlon today. 1000 meter swim, 12k bike, 4k run. There were 49 participants, and some of them were other Bearcats. This one is more heavily oriented on the swim, because it’s designed for swimmers. I got first in my age group (but Adam and I were the only ones in our age group), and 12th overall, with a time of 59:51. The first place guy overall, Tyler Storie (Senior Nationally ranked swimmer), got 46 minutes something. I didn’t have time to train for the running, so I’m having trouble walking now.
The biking part was hilly, but not as bad as the Stayton triathlon. I was still out of breath on the hills though.
At the end I was wondering if I would collapse, so I went to hang onto a nearby fence. But then that raised the question of whether I would make it to the fence or not…

Long course morning practice

Saturday, May 28th, 2005

We had morning practice in Corvallis again this morning, from 8:00 to 10:00. It was supposed to be from 7:00 to 10:00, but Kate got the times wrong so we all showed up at 8:00. It was really hard, and our main set was 3×100’s @ 1:40, 300 @ 3:45, 3×100’s @ 1:35, 300 @ 3:45, 3×100’s @ 1:30, 300 @ 3:45, 3×100’s @ 1:25, but we did the last 2×100’s cooldown because it was the end of practice. It was actually longer than that, but that’s how far we got before running out of time. We swam 7100 meters (4.41 miles) today.

Trip to the beach

Friday, May 27th, 2005

We went to the beach today. There was a huge dune, about 200 feet tall, that I climbed. It took seven minutes to get up and thirty seconds to come down. The dune was so steep that when I was running down the side, I jumped up and didn’t come back down for a few seconds.

The rectangular sand mansion that I built was right on the edge of the tide, so I made a wall and a ditch around it to protect it from the waves.

I’ve opened my own CafePress shop, currently selling two different t-shirts called “A geek I am” and “Pain doesn’t hurt”. Please take the time to visit it.

Monday evening practice

Monday, May 23rd, 2005

Our main set today was 9×300’s, the first three are on the 3:55, the second set of three is on the 3:40, and the last three are on the 4:10 but it has to be the fastest of all three sets. And there’s a minute rest in between each set of three. I had to race Erica on the last 300, and when I finished I couldn’t get out of the pool at first. I think my arms are going to fall off…

Resurrecting old computers

Saturday, May 21st, 2005

We brought the old G3 tower into my room, and I installed Tiger on it and updated the software. It’s only 350MHz, which is too slow to run an AirPort card, so I’m using the super-powerful wifi antenna that I made. But since the receiver is made by D-Link it overheats easily, and the dish of the antenna makes it overheat even more. So I set up a fan to cool it down, which works really well. However, there are now at least 12 power cables connected to outlets in my room, and it’s threatening to short circuit.

404 assassinated

I’ve tracked down the source of the 404 error when trying to download the Time Converter widget, so the link now works properly.

Morning practice

Saturday, May 21st, 2005

We had morning practice in Corvallis this morning from 8:00 to 10:00, and it was hard. Our main set was 3 800’s descend 1-3 (and remember it’s a long course pool), and then right after that we had an I.M. set that was 4 50’s fly, 200 I.M., 4 50’s back, 200 I.M., 4 50’s breast, and 200 I.M. The 200 I.M.’s were supposed to be descend 1-3, but I didn’t hear when someone said that so I did them all the same speed.
Our total distance was 6700 meters (4.16 miles).
